In 2011, Ruben came to BCC Soweto. His journey to BCC was a difficult one, with a story of abuse and neglect. He had been deliberately burnt with hot water and left at home to do chores around the small rented room he shared with his stepmother and her children.

From standing at the gates to Bethlehem Community Centre one day in early 2011, watching the boys and girls playing to now participating in games and attending school, Ruben is an active and happy boy, who now calls Bethlehem his home. Ruben is deaf. He attends a school for hearing impaired children.

BCC and the local District Children’s Department worked together to ensure Ruben’s protection, health and education.
